Maple Magic, a step back in time to when Native Americans and early settlers tapped trees to make maple syrup, will be offered in Allegany State Park three times during the next week.
The program is offered by Nature EdVentures of Buffalo at Camp Allegany starting 11am Sunday, from 11am to 2pm Wednesday, and starting at 1pm March 13. Reservations are required.
The program allows participants to step back in time with visits to Native American and early settler sugaring camps with costumed interpreters, learn about the modern day process of sugaring, visit a 1943 working sugarhouse and venture into the sugar bush to collect sap.
Indoors, participants can view sugaring displays, create maple crafts in the children's craft area or quietly page through one of many maple sugaring books in the Book Nook. Savor the taste of fresh, hot pancakes with real syrup, sausage and hot drinks after a tour (included with fee.)
The activities will take place outside even in the case of inclement weather. Dress accordingly. Waterproof footwear is essential. Allow two to three hours for the program.
The cost of the tour and lunch is $13 per adult; $8 per youth ages 4 to 10; 3 and younger are FREE. Advance registration is required. Group size is limited to 20 people per program. Reservations may be made by calling 479-9190.
