Spring brings budding trees, warm days and the cacophony of morning song. Bird song is one of the many joys of early spring. In 1962, Rachel Carson penned “Silent Spring” wherein she lamented, “Over increasingly large areas of the United States, spring now comes unheralded by the return of the birds, and the early mornings are strangely silent where once they were filled with the beauty of bird song.” Lucky for us here in Cattaraugus County, we are still blessed with the song of hundreds of different species of bird, especially in the springtime.

Join the Cattaraugus County Bird Club for their annual series of bird walks, designed to find and identify the numerous song birds responsible for morning music. The Cattaraugus County Bird Club provides its members and the community an opportunity to learn about the study of birds within Cattaraugus County. They hold monthly meetings at the First Presbyterian Church on Laurens Avenue in Olean at 7:00 pm on the 3rd Friday of the month from September through May.

The Cattaraugus County Bird Club Walks are free and open to the public. They are to be held the first four Saturdays in May at Pfeiffer Nature Center’s Eshelman Property, located at 1420 Yubadam Road in Portville. The walks, held May 1st, May 8th, May 15th and May 22nd, will begin at 8 AM and last approximately three hours each. “We’re really excited to have the Cattaraugus County Bird Club back on the property this year,” says Margaret Cherre, executive director of Pfeiffer Nature Center. “It’s always great to be able to go out and identify the birds on the Nature Center’s property, not only by sight, but by sound.”

Participants in the Cattaraugus County Bird Club Walks are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and dress for the weather and the trail. The walks will be lead by bird enthusiasts from the Bird Club. Also, on May 8th, it is International Migratory Bird Day. “We have many different species of migratory bird on the Eshelman Property. We’re an exceptionally good home for water fowl,” says Susan Avery, Naturalist at Pfeiffer Nature Center.
