What better way to spend a day with family and friends at that at the 17th Annual Maple Weekend™ on March 17-18 and March 24-25, 2012 from 10am-4pm each day presented by the New York State Maple Producers Association? About 110 maple producers across New York will be hosting open houses for the public to see how maple syrup and other related products are made. This family-oriented event is sure to delight visitors of all ages. 

Participants will be boiling sap into maple syrup and many will demonstrate the making of other maple products. Of course, visitors can sample and purchase the maple products. In addition some of the sugarhouses will provide of variety of other activities to make your visit to them even more memorable.

Admission is FREE!

Maple weekends take place regardless of the weather, so please dress accordingly for your visit.

Activities: The Moore family opens their Pancake House and sugar shack every March through the end of April. Our 5,600-tap maple operation is n tubing and man-made vacuum. We use a reverse osmosis unit, a steam-away, and a new high efficiency oil-fired arch. Nextto the sugar shack is our pancake house, where we serve all-you-can eat butter milk pancakes. We have decorated it with family antiques, ranging from an oxen yoke to a 1910 wedding dress. On Maple Weekend we will have wagon rides to the sugar bush. Wewill offer samples of our maple products.

Activities: Family-owned Wright Farms has been in business since 1840, with five generations of Wrights producing maple syrup and maple products on the farm. Currently there are over 7000 taps. A modern sugarhouse containing a 6x16 wood fired evaporator with anenergy saving steamaway system is used to produce 1100 to 1300 gallons of pure maple syrup each year. We will serve jack wax (sugar on snow) throughout the day.
Directions: From Franklinville go north on Rt 98 to County Rd 80 (Laidlaw Road). We are 2.5 miles on the right. From Arcade, take Rt 98 south 3.8 miles to Cty Rd 22 (Maple Grove Rd) Right on Cty Rd 22, go 7 miles til it is Cty Rd 21, turn on Laidlaw (Cty Rd 80).

Top 10 site for Steelhead Fishing

Cattaraugus Creek has been listed in the top 10 sites for Steelhead Fishing (rainbow trout fishing) by 2 outdoor magazines. Steelhead Trout AKA Rainbow trout are very similar to Salmon in both taste and habits. Unlike other areas of the United States, our native Rainbow trout (Steelhead Trout) spend a majority of time in Lake Erie a freshwater lake and spawn in the Cattaraugus Creek and other tributaries.

The following is from the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation's article "Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries"

Lake Erie's tributary streams, both big and small, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend New York's Lake Erie tributaries on their mission to spawn. Excellent fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience.
