I Love My Park Day is an exciting statewide event to celebrate and enhance New York's state parks, historic sites and public lands and bring visibility to the entire state park system and its needs. Volunteers from across the state will participate in cleanup, improvement, and beautification events at New York State parks and historic sites. Volunteers will celebrate New York's state park system by:

Trimming brush and cleaning up the Red House bike path
Litter pick up at the Red House & Beehunter picnic & Beach areas
Stick/ branch pick up in public areas and campgrounds
Fire pit rebuilding at the Red House campgrounds and cabin loops
Hiking Trail litter clean up
Lake Front litter clean up
McIntosh Cabin Painting and more!

I Love My Park Day is coordinated at the statewide level by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) in partnership with Allegany State Park and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). Friends groups and park staff will oversee cleanup, improvement and beautification projects and work with volunteers.

New York State is a leader in parks and conservation because of a long history of stewardship and generosity of private citizens. Friends groups and volunteers are more important than ever to keep parks beautiful, clean, and welcoming for all to visit and enjoy. Volunteer participation in a cleanup day will help enhance these important places during lean budget times and show elected leaders that there is strong public support for our park system. This event will be sponsored in part by J-Con Parks, Allegany State Park's concessionaire.

Those interested in volunteering in the project at Allegany State Park can register to volunteer by visiting www.ptny.org/ilovemypark or by emailing Sandy Boczar, Friends of Allegany I Love my Park Day Committee Chairperson at samni157 [at] roadrunner [dot] com. For more information please visit the Friends of Allegany State Park Facebook page or visit them online at www.friendsofallegany.com.

Last year in cooperation with park staff, the Friends of Allegany coordinated the parks most successful ILMP Day since its inception with over 165 volunteers, coming in a close second for the largest turn out in the state! We are looking forward to serving our wonderful park in 2017.

Yours in Allegany,

Paul Crawford, President

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
