Get out of the house and come join in the fun as Allegany State Park continues its series of hikes called “3rd Saturday Treks.” As the name implies, these free, family-friendly hikes will take place on the 3rd Saturday of each month from April through October. The treks will be led by park staff.

This month’s 3rd Saturday Trek will take place on October 21st, 2017. Participants will be taken on an interpretative hike through the ruins around Science Lake in Allegany State Park. Much of the hike will be around the old “Buffalo Science Camp” or as many people referred to it as “the School in the Forest”.  Attendees are asked to meet at the Science Lake parking area (program site 40), located on ASP Rt. 3 at Science Lake, at 10:00am, and to come dressed for the weather.

For more information, visit the Allegany State Park Facebook page or contact the Environmental Education/Recreation Department at 716-354-9101 ext. 236.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which are visited by 69 million people annually. For more information on any of these recreation areas, call 518-474-0456 or visit www.parks.ny.gov, connect with us on Facebook, or follow on Instagram and Twitter.

Grab the craziest Hawaiian shirt you can find and hula your way to Allegany State Park for our 7th Annual Beach Party!

The fun will begin at 6pm at the Red House Beach area. Allegany's own Artist in Residence and Buffalo musician, Kevin McCarthy, will kick off the live music performances. McCarthy has twice been voted top solo artist and was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

McCarthy will be followed by Lancaster High School's Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra. This unique, award-winning orchestra was established in 1974 and is the third oldest continuing steel drum program in the US. They perform locally, nationally and internationally, making up to 30 appearances each year. In addition to winning multiple awards, the group has released 3 popular CDs!

The evening will also feature Mark Baker of Eagle Dream Rehabilitation Center with his live birds of prey, activities for the kids, and a "Craziest Hawaiian Shirt" contest for all ages. We may even break out the limbo stick! There will be a chicken barbeque dinner available for purchase, or feel free to bring your own luau picnic supper. A spectacular fireworks display will light the skies over Red House Lake in the evening.

New this year, event attendees can check out a local vendor area sponsored by the Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce.

Top 10 site for Steelhead Fishing

Cattaraugus Creek has been listed in the top 10 sites for Steelhead Fishing (rainbow trout fishing) by 2 outdoor magazines. Steelhead Trout AKA Rainbow trout are very similar to Salmon in both taste and habits. Unlike other areas of the United States, our native Rainbow trout (Steelhead Trout) spend a majority of time in Lake Erie a freshwater lake and spawn in the Cattaraugus Creek and other tributaries.

The following is from the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation's article "Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries"

Lake Erie's tributary streams, both big and small, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend New York's Lake Erie tributaries on their mission to spawn. Excellent fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience.
