Ronald Netsky's Catskill Scenery

The Olean Public Library Art Gallery will open the exhibit Dreamscapes: Prints by Ronald Netsky on November 9th. The public is invited to view this free exhibition through December 15, 2017.

Netsky is Professor of Art at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York where he teaches printmaking. He also teaches printmaking at the Woodstock School of Art. Netsky received his BFA from Philadelphia College of Art and his MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. His prints are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz among others.

Speaking of his medium, Netsky explains, “I am a printmaker, but I have never thought of printmaking as a way of reproducing images. I think of etching and lithography as primary media and the ability to make multiples, a fringe benefit. Over three decades I have come to know these media not as devices to produce quantities of an image, but as the means to create unique works of art that could not be created in any other way.” His subject matter is most often the natural environment. As he explains, “this has tended to be the interplay between organization and chaos found in nature.”

This is one of a series of library exhibits administered by the Olean Public Library and the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. This series is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The Olean Public Library Art Gallery is located at 134 North 2nd Street in Olean, and the hours are Mondays through Thursdays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has served the greater Cattaraugus County region for more than 17 years with quality arts programs.

Top 10 site for Steelhead Fishing

Cattaraugus Creek has been listed in the top 10 sites for Steelhead Fishing (rainbow trout fishing) by 2 outdoor magazines. Steelhead Trout AKA Rainbow trout are very similar to Salmon in both taste and habits. Unlike other areas of the United States, our native Rainbow trout (Steelhead Trout) spend a majority of time in Lake Erie a freshwater lake and spawn in the Cattaraugus Creek and other tributaries.

The following is from the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation's article "Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries"

Lake Erie's tributary streams, both big and small, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend New York's Lake Erie tributaries on their mission to spawn. Excellent fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience.
