Farewell to the Randolph Mammoth at the Catt Co Museum

In May of 1934, workers using a power scraper to dig a pond at the State Fish Hatchery near Randolph made a startling discovery.  They unearthed what was later identified as the skull and tusks of a Columbian mammoth; a particularly rare find for our region.  In the days that followed, much excitement was generated in the area as locals flocked to the dig site to witness the excavation.  Soon, however, the Randolph Mammoth was crated and shipped to Albany, where it would spend several decades on display at the State Museum.

After years of waiting, the Cattaraugus County Museum was thrilled to host the Randolph Mammoth when it finally returned to Cattaraugus County in July, 2016, on loan from the State Museum.  Time is running out, howver, for anyone who has yet to visit the museum and see this exhibit.  The Randolph Mammoth will move on to its next location at the end of April.

In order to allow as many people as possible to see the mammoth before it departs, the Cattaraugus County Museum will host a "Farewell to the Randolph Mammoth" event on Saturday, April 21.  The museum will be open from 12pm to 4pm and at 1pm there will be a talk given by Dr. Robert Feranec, the Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the New York State Museum.  The talk will focus on the history and scientific significance of the Randolph Mammoth specimen.  If you have yet to see the mammoth, or just want to see it again before it moves on, please join us.

The Cattaraugus County Museum is located in the Stone House, 9824 Rt. 16 in Machias.  Our regular hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 9am to 4pm.  Call us at (716) 353-8200 with any questions, or visit our website at www.cattco.org/museum.
