Christmas in Allegany State Park 2017

Celebrate Christmas in Allegany State Park!  The holidays are fast approaching and there's no better way to get into the holiday spirit than by spending some time in Allegany State Park!   Join us Saturday, December 2nd as we present our first annual "Christmas in the Park."

The fun starts at 1:00 p.m. in the Red House Administration building. Stop by and hang a couple of ornaments as we decorate the big tree in the lobby. We will also have holiday crafts for the kids. From 2:00-4:00 p.m. Make your way down to the Red House Picnic Area shelter where Santa, on a short break from his duties at the North Pole, will greet kids and hear what they want for Christmas!

While waiting to see Santa, folks are invited to make a pine cone bird feeder to hang on our outdoor Christmas tree. These natural decorations will make winter survival a little easier for our winged friends here in the park! Also from 2:00-4:00 p.m. There will be games such as Snowman Snowball Toss, a nature scavenger hunt, holiday Tic-Tac-Toe and Kan Jam, and more!

Make your way back to the Administration Building for a tree lighting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. This fun-filled day culminates with a children's story read by the fireside at 4:45 p.m.
The Friends of Allegany State Park and the Allegany State Park Historical Society will be on hand to introduce folks to their organizations. Light refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Friends of Allegany State Park.

In this, the season of giving, we are asking event participants to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the local food pantry. This is sure to be a great day! Don't miss out!

Top 10 site for Steelhead Fishing

Cattaraugus Creek has been listed in the top 10 sites for Steelhead Fishing (rainbow trout fishing) by 2 outdoor magazines. Steelhead Trout AKA Rainbow trout are very similar to Salmon in both taste and habits. Unlike other areas of the United States, our native Rainbow trout (Steelhead Trout) spend a majority of time in Lake Erie a freshwater lake and spawn in the Cattaraugus Creek and other tributaries.

The following is from the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation's article "Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries"

Lake Erie's tributary streams, both big and small, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend New York's Lake Erie tributaries on their mission to spawn. Excellent fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience.
