Now you will be able to find a little bit of your favorite park, Allegany State Park, in the Village of Ellicottville!  Bear Paw Shoppe will feature "camping style" decor, gemstones, t-shirts, picture frames, mugs, jewelry, and seasonal items. The name for the store is a take on the Bear Paw Fudge and Bear Paw Mining Company that are currently featured at ASP (in the Quaker General Store and Red House general Store, respectively).  Of course the famous fudge will be sold here also!

Opened on Dec 15th, 2017, this shop is between Subway and Dom's Butcher Block at 38 Washington St.  Hours are 10am to 6pm on weekdays and 10am to 7pm on weekneds through the winter months.  Stay tuned for spring hours via their Facebook page.

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
