GeoTrail in Western New York

Enchanted Mountains GeoTrail logo The Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County offers something for all seasons. Horseback riding and fishing in the spring, hiking and camping in the summer, hunting and scenic beauty in the fall, skiing and snowmobiling in the winter, and of course, geocaching all year round are just some of the great attractions to the area.

Find all of the Enchanted Mountains GeoTrail (EMGT) Caches in Cattaraugus County's 32 towns in 2 years. For each town cache you find you will receive that town's wooden nickel. When a person has collected all 32 wooden nickels you may request the geocoin that will be available in 2010.

All EMGT geocaches are officially registered with Geocaching.com. Participants will need to be registered on Geocaching.com to retrieve the coordinates and other location information. Registering on Geocaching.com is free.

Before setting out to find caches, you may want an official leaflet. Leaflets are free and can be obtained at the starter cache as well as the County Building in Little Valley. Each cache will have a unique keyword written on the inside of the cache container's lid. Write this keyword down next to the town name in your leaflet. You will then either mail the list of town and keywords to the address listed above OR simply fill out the on-line form with your latest cache(s) and we will send you your wooden nickel. You may also stop in to the Tourism office at the County Building during business hours to obtain your nickels. Leaflets are the property of the cacher to retain as a keepsake, so any leaflet's mailed in, will be returned with your wooden nickel(s).

There will be a total of 32 towns to visit, with half of the caches being placed in 2009 and the other half being placed in 2010. Successful collection of all 32 wooden nickels will entitle the cacher to a special commemorative Cattaraugus County GeoCoin.

disabled caches

This trail has been a lot of fun, but the requirement to find all caches has been very frustrating. We need one more trip to finish the series, but one of the few remaining caches we need has been disabled for almost a month and hasn't been found since July 3rd. This is the latest disappoint in the series. Earlier, we were surprised to find one of the cache owners had disabled a muggled puzzle cache and moved it miles away without noting that on the cache page. We really want to finish the series, but the frustration has made us pause. It would be awful to find all but one of the caches and not receive a coin for which we have spent so much time. This is a great idea and the area is wonderful, but I can't suggest any of our friends from outside the area take this one on. Dave of miatabug

I have colelcted the first 16 from 2009. I have since been deployed and I am worried if I'll be back in time to collect the second lot and the prize. Since the last 16 were only published in May of 2010, will the end date be May of 2011?

No, there is no time limit.

Terrain Difficulty

Perhaps consider the option of skipping a few caches to earn the coin. I realize the purpose is to have everyone visit all the towns, so maybe a photo and explanation at an interesting location in the town could be required. Some cachers are unable to negotiate the higher terrain levels, and thus the caches become unhappy memories of the town. One of the reasons for the success of the AGT series is that the adventure is available to all ability levels.
