The Largest New York State Park is Allegany State Park which is the 3rd largest in the United States of America with 65,000 acres (97 square miles) and many miles of trails. Gowanda was settled in 1810 by Turner Aldrich and incorporated as Gowanda in 1848. The name "Gowanda" came from the Seneca Indian phrase of "a valley among the hills" or "under the cliffs."
