2018 Family Day at the Catt Co Museum

The Cattaraugus County Museum announced their "Family Day at the Museum: will return this year from 10am - 4pm on June 16.

Part of New York State's "Path Through History" weekend, organizers said they have planned a day of programming for families, including wildlife education, live music, blacksmithing demonstrations and featuring new exhibits.  There will be food available, sold by local Boy Scout Troups. 

The schedule will include: 

  • 11am - Wild Spirit Education "Owl Ecology"
  • 12:30pm - Fiddle Kids of Western New York

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams.

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
