What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

A Total Solar Eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. This causes the Moon to totally obscure the image of the sun for the viewer on Earth.

Since the Moon blocks the Sun for a few minutes this will cause a period of darkness, which on average is up to 3 minutes.

Why is it a Big Deal?

The last total solar eclipse to pass over New York State was on January 24, 1925.

There won't be another total eclipse until 2045. This is a once or twice in a lifetime opportunity!

Things To Be Aware Of:

Season & Weather

During April in Western New York, the ground may be a mix of snow and mud and it may be raining or snowing.

We may have either too many clouds to see the eclipse or the perfect weather causing mass gatherings!

Safety Glasses

Don't look directly at the sun without proper safety filters. When buying solar glasses or filters, make sure they meet the ISO 12312-2 requirements

Disorientation

Animals and people may become disoriented due to the environmental changes.

The temperature could drop over 20 degrees in less than 2 minutes.

The sky will darken quickly and stay dark for an average of 3 minutes.

Traffic

A Total Solar Eclipse can be the largest event in a region, causing mass gatherings and heavy traffic.

There may be traffic issues caused by cars stopping on the road or pulling off of the road.

Street Lights

If you want to get the full effect of the Total Solar Eclipse, be aware of surrounding yourself with street lights that will turn on once it starts to get dark.
