Wild Wing Festival at Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary

Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary, the largest covered waterfowl Sanctuary in the world is having The Wild Wing Festival on Sunday August 26thth from 12-5 at the Sanctuary at 5067 Townline Road, Delevan, NY 14042.

The 10’ tall Rubber Duck will make another appearance at Gooseneck Hill.  Have your picture taken with it.  ”The Rustic Ramblers” with Gene Hilts on steel guitar will be playing.  Colden Mill will be serving Ribs, Pulled Pork, Salem Hot dogs, BBQ Chicken, Sausage Patty Sandwich, Potato Salad, Coleslaw, Cupcakes and Giant Cookies.

Guided Bird tours will be given throughout the day and are $2 for each tour and admission is only $5.  Gooseneck Hill was unfortunately NOT able to be OPEN EVERY SUNDAY in July and August this year due to the damage to the aviary fencing and netting. They received a lot of damage from the 20" of snow received on March 2nd.  They had gotten most of it cleaned up and were planning on opening, but were then hit with more damage from 4 trees on the netting and fencing on June 13 when they had either a tornado or straight line winds blow down.  There are now more repairs forcing them not to remain closed throughout the summer of 2018 EXCEPT for two annual festivals, this one and the "Rubber Ducky Festival" held in July.

Gooseneck Hill does not receive any government funding or grants. They have 700 endangered and protected ducks, geese and swans from all over the world. All the birds can fly this 5 acre sanctuary. This is the last time you will be able to see the birds this year. Come and support them. Top 10 site for Steelhead Fishing

Cattaraugus Creek has been listed in the top 10 sites for Steelhead Fishing (rainbow trout fishing) by 2 outdoor magazines. Steelhead Trout AKA Rainbow trout are very similar to Salmon in both taste and habits. Unlike other areas of the United States, our native Rainbow trout (Steelhead Trout) spend a majority of time in Lake Erie a freshwater lake and spawn in the Cattaraugus Creek and other tributaries.

The following is from the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation's article "Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries"

Lake Erie's tributary streams, both big and small, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend New York's Lake Erie tributaries on their mission to spawn. Excellent fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience.
