Holiday Valley Resort is hosting Fall Foliage Weekends where you can take a ride up the Mardi Gras or Spruce Lake chairlifts on Saturdays and Sundays during the month of October (Oct 3-4, Oct. 10-11, Oct. 17-18 and Oct. 24-25) to view the spectacular fall leaves on the hillsides.

  • Mardi Gras will operate from noon to 4:00 and Spruce Lake will operate from 11:00 to 4:30, weather permitting. $10 per person, kids 6 and under are free. Please note: dogs, backpacks or bags are not permitted on the lift.
  • Guess the weight of the giant pumpkin at the bottom of Mardi Gras. Weekly winners of $20 Holiday Valley gift card!
  • Hot dogs and burgers served at the top of Mardi Gras.
  • Sky High Adventure Park is open on weekends through October 25 including the Aerial Park, Mountain Coaster, Climbing Forest, Gem Mining and e-bike rentals.
  • Hike the miles and miles of trails at Holiday Valley...or try our Geocaching treasure hunt
  • Explore the 32 miles of WNYMBA Mountain Biking trails on the state land behind Holiday Valley. A detailed topographical map is available at the Inn at Holiday Valley front desk, $10 to support WNYMBA.
  • The 18 hole Double Black Diamond Golf Course is truly spectacular in the fall.
  • Golf Shop and Mountain Shop will have "Bargains Beyond Belief" at the Sidewalk Sale in the base area.
  • American Hawkeye birds of prey plans to have birds on display/flying at the top of Spruce on Sept. 19, 27, and Oct. 17 and 18.
  • The Inn, Tamarack and Rental Management Properties have great prices for lodging all through the fall.

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
