Hinsdale Community Days 2018

The Hinsdale Community will be hosting special Sale Days in conjunction with the Rt. 16 Corridor Garage Sale Days (Yorkshire Corners to Knapp Creek)!  On Saturday the 15th, the Fire Department and Hinsdale Historical Society will be hosting an open house - "Remember the Good Old Days". 

Hot Dogs, Root Beer Floats and Hinsdale's own version of cookies and cream will be available for $1 a piece!  The Historical Society will also be having a bake sale to benefit the Museum. Museum hours are 11am - 2pm. 

The Hinsdale Methodist Church will have "yard" sales Thurs, Fri and Saturday from 8am to 3pm with speical "Fill a Bag Day" on Saturday.   The Maplehurst Baptist Church, on the Corner of Rt. 16 and Rt. 446 will have a Church Sale Day on the 15th as well!

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
