First Day Hike 2020 at Pfeiffer Nature Center

“There’s just something beautiful about walking on snow that nobody else has walked on.  It makes you believe you are special.”  Carol Rifka Brunt.  Would you like to begin the New Year doing something fun out in nature?  If so, then join us on our 5th annual winter’s day hike at Pfeiffer Nature Center!

The hike will be moderately strenuous- which, in terms of exercise means you will be able to talk but not sing during the activity.  The trek is NOT an interpretive hike so stops will not be made along the trails.  Any sharing of information will occur as casual, friendly banter amongst the participants.

This hike will take place at the Lillibridge Preserve.  1974 Lillibridge Rd., Portville.  The hike is free to the public and will take place rain or shine.  The hike will be canceled if we are experiencing extreme weather conditions. If the weather appears questionable, look for a cancellation notice on the top of our website home page.  Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is not required.  For more information contact Pfeiffer Nature Center Administration Office 716-933-0187 or visit our website at www.pfeiffernaturecenter.org

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
