Holiday Valley's Pond Skimming

The zaniest of all spring events, Pond Skimming on March 28th challenges skiers and snowboarders to try to skim across an ice water filled pond at the bottom of Yodeler. Some will make it all the way across, but many end up getting very wet (and cold!). Prizes are awarded for the best skimmer, the best costume, the best kid and of course the most spectacular splash. Registration is free and it starts at 11:00AM at the bottom of Yodeler, the event starts at 1:00. Kids under 18 must have a parent signature, minimum age is 8 years old. All participants get a one day pool pass for the Holiday Valley summer pool complex. Plus music, mini-snowbar with beer specials, barbeque! Maximum of 50 pond skimmers.

And the...King of Mountain Dogs Year 2 will take place starting at noon! This event is for amateur dogs...the only qualification is that they get along with other dogs. Dogs will compete in an obstacle course and perform their best trick for the glory of being the very first Holiday Valley King of the Mountain Dogs! A raffle will be held to support our local animal shelter. Maximum of 15 dogs in the competition, register at the bottom of Yodeler starting at 11AM.

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
