ASP Geobash V will be held at Camp Allegany in the Red House area of Allegany State Park. The Geobash is a special event devoted to geocaching, a new sport celebrating its tenth anniversary this spring. A geocache is a box of trinkets, most often an ammo can or a Tupperware container. It is hidden, with permission of the landowner/manager, and the GPS coordinates are posted on the internet. Geocachers locate th hidden box using a GPS receiver, trade a trinket, and post a log of their adventure online. There are currently 22 geocaches at Allegany State Park. The Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism introduced the Enchanted Mountains GeoTrail in 2009. Coordinates for 16 geocaches were released. County representatives will be at Geobash V with information on the EMGT and 16 new caches placed this spring. While the favorite activity of Geobash participants is looking for the caches, there are many additional activities planned. Friday evening activities will include a family movie, a Native American Storyteller and a bonfire. Saturday there will be a series of educational seminars with topics such as wilderness first aid, geocaching in scouting, geodog first aid and "whereigo" caches. Games and activities for adults and kids will include the ammo can toss and traditional kids pinata. Saturday night there will be a dance under the big tent with a DJ. Sunday activities include the traditional pancake and sausage breakfast. Plenty of activities all weekend for all ages. Treasure hunt on the beach during the GeoBash IV at Allegany State Park Cattaraugus County has joined the worldwide phenomenon of geocaching with 17 caches in 2009 and will be setting out 16 more in 2010. Register on geocaching.com to retrieve coordinates and other information. Before setting out to find caches, pick up your official leaflet at: Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce, Randolph Area Community Development, Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce or the Tourism Office in the County Building in Little Valley. Each cache will have a unique keyword written on the inside of the cache container's lid. After successfully finding all caches and keywords, the cacher will either mail his leaflet in for "coins" or register on-line at EnchantedMountains.com/geotrail and the "coins" will be mailed. Please remember, to keep it fun for all geocachers, please don't share the keywords!
