Blueberries are back and delicious!

The lovely time of year when you can chomp down as many freshly picked blueberries as possible is finally among us! Use them as fresh toppings on your waffles, pancakes, oatmeal or freeze them for a smoothie, at a later date, when you're craving the sweet taste. Your body and mind will benefit no matter which way you prefer.

We have plenty of locations where you and the family can go out and pick in the warm sun. Make sure to check and follow covid-19 guidelines

Here are the locations: 

Camp’s Blueberries: 7 acre u-pick or we pick blueberry farm. Open Monday-Thursday 9am-8pm. Friday and Saturday 9am-5pm. Located at 67 Larkin Street, Randolph. 716-358-6422

Burdick Blueberries: 40 acre pick-your-own blueberry and flower farm. Open Wednesday-Saturday 8am-8pm and Sundays 8am-5pm. Located at 8267 Thompson Road, Cattaraugus. 716-257-9760

Pepper’s Blueberry Hill Farm: Pick from many varieties. All natural, no spray! Must bring your own container. Open daily dawn till dusk. Located at 3290 Bear Creek Road, Franklinville. 716-307-0903

Childs Blueberry Farm: Pick-your-own superbly flavored, pest free, blueberries with a free ride out to the field in a limo golf cart. Open Tuesday-Sunday 9am-7pm. Located at 3172 Cooper Hill Road, Hinsdale. 716-557-2334

Great Valley Berry Patch: U-pick blueberries, garden peas and snow peas. Free picking containers provided. Cucumbers, zucchini and summer squash will be ready within the next week. Fall raspberries and corn are expected to be ready in August. Open Wednesday-Saturday 9am-8pm, Sunday 9am-5pm. Located at 5608 Humphrey Road, Great Valley. 716-945-5221

Blueberry Meadows: U-pick farm, bring your own container. Open Monday-Saturday 8:30am-6:00pm. Located at 1414 Rowe Ave., Weston Mills. 716-373-2865

Crisafulli Blueberries: Pick-your-own, all natural, no pesticide, blueberries. Open 7 days a week 9am-6pm. Located at Maple Ave., Allegany.

Canticle Farm Market: Not a u-pick farm, but a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to choose from! Open Tuesdays and Fridays 12pm-6pm. Located at 3809 Old State Road, Allegany. 716-373-0200 ext. 3358

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
