Kinesthesia at the JCC Center Gallery

Houghton College Professor Transforms JCC Center Gallery into an immersive art experience!  Artist Ryann Cooley uses polished stainless steel, polyethylene micro-fibers, digital projectors and audio components to completely envelope and transform the entire JCC Center Gallery into a singular work of art. Experience “Kinesthesia (2),” an immersive environment in which Cooley modulates color, light and sound to create movement. The opening reception for this exhibition is Friday evening, April 20 from 6-8 p.m. with live music by the jazz trio, LTM. The reception is free, open to the public, and appetizers and beverages will be served.

An award-winning artist in both the fine and applied arts, Cooley works in the mediums of photography, video, sculpture and installation. He explains the intent behind “Kinesthesia:” “I focus on the idea of phenomenon as a physical presence in relation to human experience and perception. As technology advances into our interactions of nearly every aspect in life, I investigate the disconnections that are the result of this development. My work primarily examines the physical disengagement with presence, common to mediated experiences in photography as well as film and video. I draw a viewer’s awareness to their physical and temporal presence by creating perceptual interactions with recorded light phenomenon that is mediated through optical devices, which elicit a range of emotions.  Furthermore, through the absence of a fixed point-of-view and narrative structure, I am able to decenter the viewer in space and time, securing the viewer in the moment.”

Cooley’s work has been exhibited internationally and is widely published. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in NYC.

The public is invited to come view “Kinesthesia (2)” at the Center Gallery in the JCC College Center on exhibit through May 25, 2018. The Center Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The gallery is closed on weekends and all college holidays. The Cattaraugus County Arts Council works in collaboration with Jamestown Community College to produce this exhibition series.
