Strolean June 2018

With the dust now settled construction to North Union Street, The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce and city leadership are inviting the community out for a night on the town.  Working with the city and members of the business community, the Chamber is announcing “StrOlean,” the event aims to bring folks to the downtown shopping district for an evening of fun.

StrOlean will feature a host of events — this festival is a walkable event throughout North Union Street. Loads of events up and down the street include: scavenger hunt, music at restaurants, beer tasting, yoga, pop up vendors, arts and crafts vendors, the movies shown on the inflatable movie screen and more. The start time of each event will be coordinated to give attendees a chance to attend as many as possible.  Come down and partake in a step by step painting class at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.  There will be two FREE classes, one at 5:30pm and another at 6:45pm.

The Neighborhood School of Dance will be "Tapping for Tips", or try out their Dace Game - do you know the popular dances?  If you get the corresponding dance to the song, then you win a prize!

Stop by the CellOne Zumbathon stage! There will be 15 minute Zumba sessions hosted by Tiffany Wiles, Mark Johnson and the Olean YMCA Zumba Team at 4pm, 4:30pm, 5pm and 5:30pm. In between sessions Bobby O and Colin Edwards from Mix 101.5 will be playing the hottest hits and giving you a chance to win some cool swag. CellOne will be on site to help you get your cell phone  situation under control for the summer too.
The African American Center for Cultural Development will host two (2) thirty minute walking tours which will begin/end at the Chamber;  proceed toward Lincoln Park on the west side of North Union Street; go around Lincoln Park to the soon to be African American Center for Cultural Development and then return coming back on the east  side of Union Street.
Check out the live haircuts outside the WT Hair salon. Specials include colored hair tattoos for $10 and mermaid  glitter/unicorn tinsel for $5.  Get a Chair Massage from Radiant Health Spa.  Chair Massages go for 5 min ($7) or 10 min ($12) and run from 1:30pm to 6:30pm.  Then listen to the Allegany Alumni and Friends Band at 7pm in the Band Concert on the JCC lawn.

StrOlean is also a means for the community to show off what downtown Olean has to offer to those from out of town.

Top 10 site for Steelhead Fishing

Cattaraugus Creek has been listed in the top 10 sites for Steelhead Fishing (rainbow trout fishing) by 2 outdoor magazines. Steelhead Trout AKA Rainbow trout are very similar to Salmon in both taste and habits. Unlike other areas of the United States, our native Rainbow trout (Steelhead Trout) spend a majority of time in Lake Erie a freshwater lake and spawn in the Cattaraugus Creek and other tributaries.

The following is from the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation's article "Steelhead Fishing in Lake Erie Tributaries"

Lake Erie's tributary streams, both big and small, receive an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead." From October through April, thousands of steelhead ascend New York's Lake Erie tributaries on their mission to spawn. Excellent fishing opportunities await any angler who wishes to try their hand at steelhead fishing. Between the acrobatic leaps, long drag-screaming runs and rod quaking head shakes, the fight of an early run steelhead is a truly exhilarating experience.
