Flyer for RTP President talk at Nannen Arboretum

Join us on Wednesday June 12, 2019, 6:00 at the Nannen Arboretum to hear Twan Leenders, President of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI), speak about the institute and their activities. Roger Tory Peterson, born in Jamestown NY in 1908, was respected worldwide as an ornithologist, artist, writer, and wildlife photographer. A warm, forthright person, Roger left a legacy of untiring zeal in the pursuit of bird studies and the conservation of natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

RTPI is the only official institutional steward of Roger Tory Peterson’s body of work and his enduring legacy. Its mission is to foster understanding, appreciation and protection of the natural world in the spirit of Dr. Peterson’s many accomplishments. By providing people with opportunities to engage in nature-focused art, education and conservation projects, RTPI staff promote the study of natural history and its connections to human health and prosperity. Twan Leenders will discuss some of the Institute’s work, ranging from monitoring Piping Plover and other beach nesting birds on the shores of the Long Island Sound, through the conservation of urban wildlife in Peterson’s hometown of Jamestown, to tropical migratory bird banding studies in the rainforests of Costa Rica and Panama. Much of RTPI’s conservation work is carried out by local high school and college students, in an effort to inspire and educate the next generation of young naturalists.

The program will take place in the Ellicottville Town Center building adjacent to the Nannen Arboretum at 28 Parkside Drive. We can take a walk in the arboretum after the presentation if weather permits. Admission is $5 at the door. Hope to see you there.
