Heritage Day is sure to be “Good old fashioned fun for everyone”. The location is downtown Portville and there will be plenty to do for this one day festival.  The Annual Portville Central School Alumni Banquet will be held the night before, with a street dance to follow at the American Legion.

Held at Pioneer Park, there is an annual car show (last year had over 80 cars), vendors, arts, antiques, crafts & plenty of food.  Chicken BBQ, a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Temple, Alumni weekend events, live animals, local performers and fun all day!

For car show questions, please call Bob @ 716-933-7111.  For vendor questions, please call Kim @ 716-904-0967.  Photo shown by Syd Evans.

Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
