2018 Independence Day at Allegany State Park

Grab your lawn chairs and head to Allegany State Park’s Quaker Beach area to celebrate our nation’s independence! The fun starts at 2:00 p.m. on July 3rd with a chicken barbecue (until sold out).  Later on, listen to live music, enjoy vendors and spend time at the beach!

The headlining act will be Jillian Eliza starting at 7:30pm. Jillian, raised in the south towns of Buffalo NY, started singing at a very young age and began writing songs at just 10 years old. She has been performing all over WNY since 18, performing with numerous bands, playing at bars and venues, as well as partnering up with WYRK, Buffalos country station, to share the stage with National artists such as Josh Turner, Wynonna Judd, Granger Smith, Jarrod Niemann, Drake White, Thompson Square, Joe Nichols, Eric Paslay, Morgan Wallah, Dylan Scott and many more! Now she continues to hone her craft while singing, playing guitar and writing original material.

Don’t forget to visit the Ask the Naturalist table from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in the Quaker Bathhouse. Capping off this fun-filled night will be a spectacular firework display over the waters of Quaker Lake! As of 2017, the launch site is located at the midpoint of the lake. Patrons should plan on adjusting their location to get the best view. Patrons planning to view the fireworks at the beach should plan to arrive early as the parking lot has limited capacity and will be closed once it is full. Attendees are also asked to obey all designated “No Parking” zones.  For more information, be sure to check the Allegany State Park Facebook page or contact the Quaker Run Area Rental office at 716-354-2182.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which are visited by 69 million people annually. Meaning of the word Cattaraugus

CATTARAUGUS, from a Seneca Indian word meaning “bad smelling banks,” referring to the odor of natural gas leaking from rock seams. http://www.dos.ny.gov/info/pdfs/countynames.pdf

The word "Cattaraugus" means "foul-smelling river bank." This name is a result of the natural gas that oozes from the river mud. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattaraugus_Creek.

In our opinion, only some of the river banks are bad smelling. Come on over and visit a creek in Cattaraugus County and tell us what you think.
